I know you're too young to understand and comprehend what I'm about to tell you. But one day you'll read this and reread this over and over again and when that happens I want you to remember and look back to when your earliest memory allows you to glimpse.
My dearest boy, it's only once that you get to enjoy your childhood. When you're a baby, all you need is mommy's milk, and comfort, and hugs, and diaper changes, and bubble baths. When you're a baby you also need some playtime. While your daddy does the playing, you do the gazing.
The first time you smiled, it made me cry. Cry for so much joy as the sight of you softens my heart too much. As time goes by, you keep enjoying being a baby. Until you learned to cry to get our attention. Until you learned how to laugh and murmur sweet somethings to us. Until we figured you are talking to us with your baby language. Until you started babbling. Until you started eating solid food. Until you first stood up on your feet. Until you first touched a book during storytelling. Until you started sleeping eight straight hours at night. Until you started enjoying peekaboo and staying awake until 10 in the evening at times. Until you learned how to clap your hands. Until you learned to do high-five and smile when you hear our praise. Until you learned that hugging me and your dad when you're scared could give you soothe. Until we celebrate your first birthday party and baby dedication. You're still a joyful and funny boy!
Now that you are one, I just remember it's been a year that I have been lacking sleep. And even when you sleep eight hours, I don't. Hey I don't mind! And it's been a year of hard toil for your daddy to provide you and me our needs. It's been a year you've been your daddy's stress reliever for when he comes home and see you scream for joy, it's like medicine for him.
Now that you are one, I can't help but be more excited. I can't wait for your first word. Can't wait for you to walk alone. Can't wait for you to run or play hide and seek with us. Can't wait for you to sightread and then read. Can't wait to hear you say 'I love you mommy and daddy!' Soon you'll be a toddler. Can't wait for a lot more firsts in your sweet childhood life.
Oh my sweet boy, when you're a child all you have to do is enjoy.
Enjoy your toys! These will help you think with logic and reason. These will force you to figure out things and solve problems so that until you're a grown up, you know. Like how you figured your black sheep was hidden by daddy under your pillow, one day you'll know the complications of things and find strength in joy to figure a way with wisdom in making things easy.
Enjoy your toys and share them with others. It's more fun playing with friends. The experience is so much different although sometimes, playing alone is necessary. Share your toys and play with others. If you do, you'll grow up knowing the essence of giving and generosity, companionship and friendship, camaraderie and loyalty.
Enjoy your books. It's amazing that even right now you love storytelling already. As much as you enjoy it, we do enjoy seeing you wiggle and hear you say 'uh ooh' at the pictures you are seeing. Go on enjoy it! For one day you'll just find yourself asking for more stories or for one story to be repeated again and again before you sleep. And one day you'll just find yourself reading maybe the Footbook all by yourself without knowing how you're able to do it. Enjoy your books and one day you won't find it difficult to study. You will one day enjoy learning and acquiring knowledge will be a fun thing to experience for you.
Enjoy the music! I mean the music we play for you and yes the music you will hear in the Kids Church soon or the music you will one day choose for your liking. Enjoy Bach and Beethoven. It will soothe you and calm you. They are like your lullabies at night to lull you to sleep. Remember how you love Balade Pour Adeline and Fur Elise. Enjoy nursery rhymes. These will teach you a thing or two, like shine as if Twinkle or give wools as if Baa Baa. Enjoy the songs about God. These will help you know Jesus, your God and Savior. Enjoy music and know the act of being in good cheers.
Finally, enjoy us your parents. As a child, the two people you will always be with are mommy and daddy. In every moment we are watching, waiting for new milestones and skills, savoring each moment with joy. We are here and will be here. In times of triumph and victories, we will be your cheerleaders. In times of tears and sorrow, we will be your pillows of comfort. In times of hard moments, we will be your guide. No matter what happens, we will love you. There will be times of discipline too but remember that it is necessary so you'll grow up to be a man of character. And we will do our every best to mold you into a Christlike person.
We love you so much. It's been a year since I gave birth to you and I just can't help but be amazed at how wonderful each moment passed. I knew the first time I behold you that you will rock our world! Have a great year ahead. We will celebrate again next year. Cheers to a lovely boy!
