Why are books important?
- Creative thinking
- Critical thinking
- Logical reasoning
- Visual purposes
- Auditory learning
These are just some of the reasons I can count why we need to read books. There are maybe tons more but at least we know the basics and major.
Yesterday, my friends and I went to the MV Logos Hope cruise ship that travels around the world to sell books for very reasonable and cheap prices.
Considering the population of Manila, the number of adults who went and are still about to go to the ship are pretty much insignificant. Seeing those adults in the ship though made me realize one thing. Being an adult myself, I started to truly believe that investing on books is a milestone for adults. How many parents would consider buying Chronicles of Narnia for them and their kids over a set of children’s clothes? Or how many of them prefer to buy the Bible over a ticket for the Dark Knight movie? Maybe those who can afford? I don’t know but I still know a lot of them who would not prefer books nor would prefer to read. I was once told by a teacher and friend that an a high school class of 50 in a public school, aside from those required reading materials, there are maybe 11 who reads Filipino romance novels, around 5 students read anime books, and one particular student (the one running for valedictorian) reads Les Miserables. What happened to the other 33 students? They play billiards, or stay in internet cafes, or go malling. What could possibly happen to them in a few more years to come? Maybe they would prefer watching TV than reading a book for their own enjoyment.
Investing in books is a great effort especially for those who are financially limited. But what’s the use of Booksale? Or opportunities like MV Doulos and MV Logos? What’s the use of cut-off or inventory sales in National Bookstore, Bestsellers, Fullybooked, and Powerbooks?
When parents and other adults collect clothes, their kids or sphere of influence will be fashionable. When parents or other adults collect books, their kids or sphere of influence will read. Where do you want to be?
